PAN, Aadhaar, Passport: Docs You Actually Need

If you've been putting off a PAN, Aadhaar, or passport application because the paperwork feels confusing, here's what's actually required right now — and one change that recently made things stricter, not simpler.

Aadhaar remains the foundation. It's the one document that shows up as accepted proof across almost every other application — PAN, passport, bank KYC, SIM activation — which is why most people are told to get it first. But a big shift landed on April 1, 2026: PAN applications can no longer be completed using Aadhaar alone. Until March 31, 2026, that single-document route was enough. Now the Income Tax Department requires proof across three separate categories — identity, address, and for the first time, a mandatory proof of date of birth (a birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet, passport, voter ID, or a magistrate's affidavit all qualify). The application form itself has also changed, from the old Form 49A to the new Form 93. If your existing PAN details don't exactly match your Aadhaar record, it's worth fixing that mismatch before it causes problems with tax filing or other financial transactions.

PAN itself isn't just for filing taxes. It becomes mandatory the moment your transactions cross certain thresholds — cash deposits or withdrawals above ₹10 lakh in a year, property purchases above ₹20 lakh, or buying a vehicle worth more than ₹5 lakh. If you're planning any of these, sorting your PAN out in advance saves you from a last-minute scramble.

A passport application asks for three things: proof of identity (Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, or driving licence all work), proof of address (a utility bill, rent agreement, or bank passbook), and proof of date of birth (typically a birth certificate). Add passport-size photographs, the online application printout, and the fee, and you're set for a standard application — Tatkaal applications carry a higher fee but move faster. For minors, the requirements shift slightly: along with the child's birth certificate, a parent's passport copy and current address proof are needed instead of the usual set.

The pattern across all three documents is the same — Aadhaar and PAN increasingly double up as proof for each other, but neither one alone is enough anymore for a fresh application. Keeping all three documents' names, dates of birth, and addresses consistent with each other is the single biggest thing you can do to avoid rejections and repeat visits.
